Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring Cleaning can seem overwhelming at times. We’ve compiled a list of top 5 tips to help you tackle this year’s spring cleaning!

Start small

If you’re like us, when you decide to do some spring cleaning the first thing you do is pound down a cup of coffee, crank up Spotify and vow not to stop until the house is spotless. But more often than not this approach only leads to a bigger mess than when you started!

Be realistic, and don’t bite off more than you can chew (preaching to ourselves here). Instead of taking on the whole house give yourself a Saturday morning to focus on one closet. The satisfaction of meeting a small goal will motivate you to take on a bigger one later!

Make Marie Kondo proud

If you don’t already know, Marie Kondo is pretty much an organization guru. One of her most well-known methods is to hold something up and ask, “does this bring me joy?” If the answer isn’t an unwavering “YES” then you should consider getting rid of it.

Sure, you might need an old IKEA coffee table one day. Maybe you’ll move back into your college dorm and need to spruce it up with your favorite Sweedish interior design pieces. But does having that extra coffee table in the garage really make you happy? We are willing to bet you would get a bigger kick out of actually being able to park your car in there.

Do a Goodwill run

You have a pile of stuff that needs a new home. Maybe that home is in a newly organized office space, or maybe that home is with somebody else altogether. Grab the stuff you Marie Kondo’d in step two and make a donation to your thrift store of choice.

Move extra belongings to storage

Sometimes getting rid of the stuff filling up your attic isn’t actually an option. Maybe you enjoy winter sports, or maybe you’re holding on to a set of golf clubs for your friend in the Peace Corps. “Sorry Alex, while you were volunteering in Tunisia I was trashing your 9 iron.”

In this scenario, your best bet is expanding your storage options with a mini storage unit. It’s the perfect cross section between making space in your home and holding onto things you will need later. And it so happens that we at Fort Knox Storage know a guy.
